Funniest Mid-Race Thought: I always have the thought of a deer taking me out mid cross race. A video went viral on some deers taking some people out during a cross race and I was thought it would be funny to see in person.

Tanner is from Lodi, Wisconsin where he attended Lodi High School. He started running as a junior in high school and quickly took to the sport. As a senior, he won the state track & field championship in the 800m. His personal bests in high school were 1:55.18 (800m) and 4:24.71 (1600m).

Tanner attended the Minnesota State University - Mankato, where he majored in Sport Management and earned a Master’s degree in Communications. His collegiate career highlights include competing at the NCAA DII Track & Field Championships in the 800m four times (twice indoors and twice outdoors), finishing as high as 3rd. He also led the Mavericks on the cross country course, twice capturing 3rd place in his conference championship, and also taking 3rd in the DII division of the Roy Griak Invitational. His collegiate personal bests include 1:48.35 in the 800m, 3:46.02 in the 1500m, 4:08.41 in the mile and 24:34 in the 8k (cross country).

Tanner joined Minnesota Distance Elite in January of 2024 and immediately had a strong first track season with the team placing well and PRing in the 1500. Throughout the 2025 track season, he built on his early success dipping below the 4 minute barrier in the mile at both the BU Terrier Classic (indoor) and the Mini-Apple Night of Miles (outdoor), where he won the race. He also qualified for, and raced in, the 2025 USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 1500m. He will continue being a middle distance specialist for the MDE squad.
